The Luckiest
"I love you."
The words left her lips sounding more like a content sigh than a whisper as she ran a slender hand through his ebony hair, fluffing it up in the process. Octavian flashed her one of those small grins that she adored so much as he wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her close to him.
"I love you too, April." He replied, placing a gentle kiss upon her forehead before swinging her around and setting her on the kitchen counter that had previously been behind him.
She wrapped her arms around his shoulders, enjoying the fact that she could now gaze over the head of her 6' boyfriend without any issue; something that she struggled to do when her feet were planted firmly on the floor.
"I'm glad to hear it." April smiled, leaning her forehead against his and gazing in his honey-colored eyes. She was just starting to get completely lost in them when her focus was interrupted by a soft kiss at the side of her neck. Followed by a second, and a third. The last however, was not another kiss but rather the abrupt pressure of a raspberry.
April laughed as Octavian pulled away from her neck, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
"That isn't fair!" She cried, tilting her head to the side and gazing down at him. The gentle giant blinked, eyebrows raised in mock innocence.
"It's not, is it..?" He asked, a smirk playing at the corner of his lips.
"No! You know I can't blow one back." She declared as she slid off the counter and landed by his side. He gazed down at the ball of lazy energy that stood next to him, her chocolate mane a bit of a mess from their nap on the couch earlier that afternoon.
"I happen to think it's perfectly fair," Octavian replied, poking the tip of her nose lightly with his finger. April scrunched up her nose playfully before making her way around the counter to the coffee machine, which was plugged in next to the stove.
"You would think that, wouldn't you?" She asked, already knowing the answer to the question. He shrugged sheepishly, then proceeded to pull two mugs out of the cabinet above her head. She waited for him to set them down before sliding around him lightly and stepping towards the fridge.
"What're you in the mood for, hun?" The brunette's voice was slightly muffled as she dug around in the fridge.
"What all have we got..?" The thin man asked as he glanced up from the coffee machine, fingers drumming out a soft rhythm in the counter as he waited for the sweet supply of caffeine to be produced.
"Well, considering I forgot to go to the store this morning, our options appear to be left over chili or breakfast for dinner." She exhaled as she stood up and looked over at him, an eyebrow raised.
Octavian pursed his lips in thought, pushing up the sleeves of his thermal as he did so. "Well, I've never been one to turn down a good egg, so..."
"Breakfast it is then!" April chirped as she laid out a carton of eggs and what remained of a gallon of milk. Octavian smiled and crouched down to pull out a large skillet from one of the lower cabinets.
"Bacon or sausage?" Came then once again muffled voice, followed by the soft clatter of items from the depths of the fridge.
"Why not both?" He replied teasingly as he turned on the stove.
"An excellent point," she replied, popping out of the fridge with an armful of assorted foods. She pushed the door closed with her hip and proceeded to set the food down just in time to slip a mug under the spout of the coffee machine, which had finally decided it was done brewing.
Octavian turned to finish making the coffee as April began cracking a few eggs into the skillet. It wasn't long before the sound of sizzling bacon filled the air, along with the constant chatter and laughter of the two as they made their way throughout the kitchen, slipping around one another is if they were in some sort of dance. The strong scent of sausage and bacon mixed with the more bitter hints of coffee floated through the air and into the lungs of the two young adults.
A short fifteen minutes later, a majority of the dishes were soaking in the sink, and the stove had been turned off. April stood by the door to the balcony, a plate in each hand containing a lovely display of eggs, meat, and biscuits, as well as some slices of fruit. Octavian reached around her broad frame and cautiously opened the door, making sure she made it outside alright before grabbing the two mugs of coffee and pulling the door shut behind him with his foot.
The couple sat down on the whicker love-seat, each with a warm plate of food in their lap and a cup of caffeine by their side.
The Sunday afternoon air was cool and the sounds of the traffic below were muted and calming. They glanced up at one another, and April once again found herself lost in Octavian's warm eyes.
"I love you." She whispered as a soft smile crossed her face.
"I love you too." He whispered back in a tone as sweet as sugar.
And both couldn't help but believe that they were the luckiest people on Earth.
